3 Holistic Tips for Travelling Stress Free this March Break
Well, spring must be around the corner because March Break is next week. Many families will be flying off on a vacation seeking warmer weather and sunshine. As you pack your bags and prepare for the vacation here are a couple of Holistic Tips to make your vacation a little more stress free.
1/ For those of you who are flying, plugged ears are a common reality but small children don’t know how to handle the pain of the pressure. As anyone who has ever been on a flight with a crying child knows it’s not only painful for the child but the parents trying to calm the child and the other passengers on the flight. Trying to get a child to swallow or chew a piece of gum while they are crying is not always an option.
As a reflexologist one of the points I am always showing people is related to the inner ear. The inner ear is where the pressure builds up from the change in air pressure. If you spread your fingers apart the reflex point for the inner ear is between the 3rd and 4th finger on each hand. The left hand is relative to the left ear and the right hand is relative to the right ear. Pinch this spot several times to activate the reflex point for the inner ear. Now massage up and down each of the fingers. Don’t worry about which finger you are massaging, just know that massaging these points is helping the ears, eyes, sinuses etc.
It doesn’t need to be obvious so while you are seated with the child just squeeze this point on each of their hands before you lift off, while you are in the air and just as you are preparing to descend. Not only will the child be comforted by you holding their hand you will also be helping their ears adjust to the change in air pressure.
Also, if the air pressure is bothering you apply the same routine to your hands.
2/ Travel with a small bottle of Lavender Oil. It’s a small enough bottle that it will be allowed in your carry on. Lavender oil is known for its calming, soothing effects. If you have a child who isn’t sleeping because of time changes or just change of routine then take 2 or 3 drops of Lavender oil and mix it with any other carrier oil such as coconut or in a pinch olive oil and rub it on their feet at sleep time. It should help them relax and drift off to sleep.
Another reason to have lavender oil handy is for its healing qualities. If you get a bite from a sand bug apply a drop of lavender oil on the itchy skin and massage it in. It should help stop the itching and prevent further infection.
3/ Specialty band aids, Dora, Spiderman, Princess whatever your children are into. Sometimes when a child gets an “OWEY” something as simple as a familiar hero band aid can help calm the child and make the pain go away faster. So as you pack your bags add a small supply of their favourite hero band aids to ward off the pain. It’s worth the expense.
I hope you have a safe and happy March Break
